Teachers of the department successfully mastered the content of the new specialization - "Computational Linguistics". In September 2008, on the initiative of the department in the educational building № 1 was opened a class of computational linguistics, which regularly offer classes in the named specialization with students-philologists. Especially actively developing computer technology to a comprehensive analysis of language and text Professors E. Nichiporchik, NI Lapitskaya, assistants EF Asenchik, IG Gomonova, SN Boikova, A. Krohmalnik.

The department was established December 1, 1975 as a result of the division Department of Russian and Belarusian (headed by Prof. PhD. Anichenko VV) into two separate entities.
The teachers of the department conduct lectures and workshops for students of Philology, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Foreign Languages and the Faculty of Psychology and prevocational training. The department traditionally prepares graduates with specialization "Linguistics", in 2005 at the Department of the specialization "Computational Linguistics" (within the specialty "Russian Philology").

Department operates on scientific and pedagogical school "Russian, Belarusian and Slavic lexicology" (supervisor - Professor Vladimir Koval).
The main activities within the scientific and pedagogical schools:
Descriptive and diachronic study appellative and onomastic lexicon of Russian, Belorussian and other Slavic languages
Vocabulary and phraseology of the Slavic languages in Cognitive, and ethnocultural aspects lingvogendernom
Artistic text linguopragmatic aspect
The department has close research links with related departments of universities in Russia and Ukraine is actively cooperating with the embassies of Russia, China, Poland and the Czech Republic.
At the department operates postgraduate specialty 10.02.02 - Russian language.
